For the Sushi Rice:
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
For the Sushi Rolls (Choose Your Fillings):
- 4 sheets of nori seaweed
- 1/2 cup sliced cucumber
- 1/2 cup avocado slices
- 1/2 cup imitation crab or cooked shrimp
- 1/2 cup fresh salmon or tuna sushi-grade
- 2 tablespoons cream cheese optional
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds for garnish
- Soy sauce wasabi, and pickled ginger (for serving)
Rinse the Rice: Wash the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to eliminate excess starch. This helps remove excess starch.
Cook the Rice: Cook the rice using a rice cooker or on the stovetop, maintaining a rice-to-water ratio of 1:1.2. After cooking, allow the rice to steam for ten minutes before using.
Season the Rice: Combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Carefully fold the mixture into the cooked rice, ensuring it is evenly coated. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
Lay the nori on a bamboo mat, spread rice, and add your fillings.
Roll firmly, seal the edge with water, and cut into slices
